STRATEGIC PLAN FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT
A Strategic Plan
The MI Works! Kalamazoo/St. Joseph Counties'
Environmental Scan Highlights and Report Card
The "Environmental Scan Highlights and Career Development System Report Card" are
part of a strategic planning effort sponsored by the Michigan Department of Career
Development and the Michigan Works! Kalamazoo/St. Joseph Workforce Development Board.
Developing a skilled workforce which meets the needs of employers is the Board's primary
goal. Just as important is the need to help employees maintain high level skills in our
fast-changing work environment. The Environmental Scan identifies significant trends on
which the Report Card is based. In an area blessed with scenic beauty, recreational
opportunities, hard workers, and people who take pride in their communities, it is
important to recognize what changes are occurring so that we may more effectively
position ourselves for the future. Some of the trends identified in the Scan are
troubling. A drop in per capita income, more people moving out of our communities
than are moving in, and a persistent poverty rate require our attention. Community
input is being sought on four tentative goals related to the Career Development
System. By November 30, 2000 an initial plan will be developed. By the end of
January, 2001, a plan of operation will be in place. It is intended for the
project to be one of continuous improvement with periodic progress reports back to
the community.
