An Analysis of UI Recipients' Unemployment Spells
Mathematica Policy Research compiled the UI Spells public use data (1979-81) to evaluate the analytical uses of information collected by the Unemployment Insurance Continuous Wage and Benefit History System and to test ways to supplement the collected information.

The data contain observations for selected unemployment insurance recipients from Missouri and Pennsylvania whose benefit year began between October 1979 and March 1980. Data for each individual were obtained from the Federal Continuous Wage and Benefit System, the State Employment Service Automated Reporting System, and a phone or mail survey conducted one year later.

The data were compiled into a single file containing demographic and household characteristics; pre-unemployment earnings, employer, and occupation; unemployment insurance claim data and benefits received; job search methods; employment services received; and post-unemployment insurance employer(s), occupation, earnings, and date(s) of employment for up to three jobs. The file contains 3,039 observations and 339 variables.
