The W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, independent research organization devoted to investigating the causes and effects of unemployment, to identifying feasible methods of insuring against unemployment, and to devising ways and means of alleviating the distress and hardship caused by unemployment. The Institute is an activity of the W.E. Upjohn Unemployment Trustee Corporation, which was established in 1932 to administer a fund set aside by Dr. W.E. Upjohn, founder of the Upjohn Company.
The Trustee Corporation was founded by Dr. and Mrs. W.E. Upjohn in 1932. The Declaration of Trust sets forth its purpose,
. . . for research into the causes and effects of unemployment and to study and investigate the feasibility and methods of insuring against unemployment and devise ways and means of preventing and alleviating the distress and hardship caused by unemployment . . .
In 1945, the Board of Trustees established the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Community Research, the forerunner of today’s Institute for Employment Research.
The staff members of the Upjohn Institute conducts a full and active roster of research that addresses the mission of the Institute. Much of the research is conducted in collaboration with scholars throughout the world. All of the research is objective and nonpartisan.
Current and recent project activities
A resident staff of economists, nine of whom hold PhD degrees, conducts research on a wide variety of employment issues. These senior staff economists are supported by research analysts, librarians, an information technology team, and administrative staff.
The Employment Management Services Division is the administrative entity for the local Workforce Investment Board, administering all of the federal and state employment programs for Kalamazoo and St. Joseph Counties.
